This time the school has wowed us yet again with an innovation not seen before, Kenya’s first computer device, The Taifa Laptop.
The journey that culminated with the launch of The Taifa Laptop, took six years. Speaking at the launch, the acting Deputy Director Education Technology Mr. Calvin Kebati termed the journey as a very trying one, “ We started with a desktop called E-Mado, which faced a lot of competition from importers, VAT and other factors. This became untenable.”
‘We are happy to launch this maiden product, this marks the first of many tha Jomo Kenyatta University is set to offer,’ said Mr. Kebati.
The project was a collaboration between Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Chinese Technology firm, Inspur and the Nairobi Industrial Technology Park, which is a Vision 2030 flagship..
The school Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga, was quite elated, “ We intend to inculcate entrepreneurial vision and technological products. The Taifa Laptop has made us proud once again. ”
The Taifa Laptop has a 14? TFT Screen, a Core i3 4th Generation Processor, 500 GB Hard Disk, 4GB RAM, Wi-Fi, HDMI Port, SD Card Slot, Mic, 3 USB Ports, 6 Cell Lithium Battery and has a Web Cam.
The Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i lauded Jomo Kenyatta’s leadership in innovations that have been of great importance in laying the needed foundation in manufacturing and entrepreneurship. The launching of Taifa Laptop is a great stride towards achieving the vision 2030.
